Things to Keep in Mind During Essay Prewriting

The essay writing process takes a lot of time and planning. While many amateur writers will spend most of the time writing the essay, the experts spend most of their time planning and revising the essay.

Rushing into the writing process and writing without a plan will get you stuck with underdeveloped ideas and a confusing essay structure. Some of these writers will eventually give up on their essay and submit the patchy essay or they will end up asking others: “Help write my essay for me.”

Here are some of the things that expert writers pay attention to:

Reading the essay guidelines

You should read the essay guidelines first and foremost, noting down the information regarding the word limit and the writing and referencing format. Some essays come with special instructions, and you should make sure to follow them.

Understanding the essay prompt

You should delineate the different parts of the essay prompt such as the task word which tells you what type of writing you are expected to produce. Writing types such as critical writing, descriptive writing, comparative writing, etc. You must have a proper look at hook examples.

Through the prompt, you should also know the subject matter of the topic and the parameters narrowing it down either in time, space, or category.

Knowing the audience

Before you begin planning your essay or reading into it, you should know the audience for your essay or for whom the essay is meant to be written. The audience and their understanding of the subject will decide what type of information you will include in your essay. You will have to simplify your prose and avoid using complex words when writing for laymen. However, if you are writing for an audience that has some expertise in the subject then you should use specialized vocabulary and avoid simplifying the concepts.

Experts writers schedule their writing process beforehand, from initial brainstorming to the final proofreading. Without the schedule, you will end up wasting more time on some parts while little on others. A good way to keep track of your progress is to allocate a time frame to each part and try to follow the time.

Brainstorming

An extensive brainstorming session occurs before your dive into the research part. Here you will use either mind mapping, listing, journaling, freewriting, or any other technique to come up with ideas and information regarding the topic at hand. These sessions will also allow you to uncover various relationships between different parts of the essay.

Research requirements

If your instructor has provided you with a list of resources then it is better to go through the list before going into other sources. The requirements for the essay might also restrict you to a certain type of sources, such as scholarly sources which include academic articles and papers. In such a case avoid the use of popular sources such as blogs, websites, and books.

Reading and note-making

You shouldn’t read each and everything in your research. Learn to skim and scan the texts to get a prior overview of the text to check for its relevance. You should also use the abstracts in academic papers and summaries in books to know what type of information the sources will have.

Make sure to make proper notes of the things that you read in persuasive speech topics. Include key points and summaries in your notes. Lastly, you should separate and note down the evidence and examples along with their references.
